Ifpa’s Pearl Of Wisdom Campaign

European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (ECCPW) takes place this week to raise awareness about cervical cancer prevention. We are working with the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) @IFPA and CervicalCheck – The National Cervical Screening Programme – to deliver the Pearl of Wisdom campaign to get women to check that they are up to date with their cervical screening and #sharethewisdom with their friends and colleagues.

In Ireland, approximately 300 women are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer each year and over 90 women die from the disease. Regular screening is the most effective way to prevent cervical cancer. Cervical screening involves a simple test, known as a smear test, to detect changes to the cells of the cervix which could develop into cancer. A sample of cells are taken from the cervix and sent to a lab to be examined for any abnormalities.

Through CervicalCheck, women aged 25 to 60 can avail of free regular smear tests from a registered practitioner of their choice. The Pearl of Wisdom campaign encourages women to check when their next free smear test is due, or avail of their first test if they have not yet done so. This can be done on cervicalcheck.ie or by calling CervicalCheck on Freephone 1800 45 45 55.

Why not #sharethewisdom with a friend and check that she is up to date with hers, as well as ensuring you are too? And, wear a Pearl of Wisdom pin this week to show solidarity with those affected by cervical cancer and to highlight the importance of cervical screening.
