National Bike Week Is On!

TAKE TO THE ROADS THIS WEEK WITH NATIONAL BIKE WEEK

National Bike Week is back, and is even bigger and better than before. The annual event promotes and celebrates all that is great about cycling and is taking place nationwide now! National Bike Week ambassador Alison Canavan was on hand, with her son James, to officially launch National Bike Week 2016 which runs until Sunday, 19th June. Enjoy eight days on two wheels in any county in Ireland, as hundreds of free cycling events take place across the country, organised by local authorities, community initiatives and cycling groups. Check out bikeweek.ie for a full list of events taking place near you.

Bike Week not only promotes the leisure and fun aspects of cycling as a family and with friends, it also highlights the importance of choosing cycling as your daily mode of transport. Cycling is environmentally friendly and it is much lower in cost than travelling by public transport or a car. Cycling as an everyday pursuit also has a number of health and physical benefits. Studies have shown that cycling is one of the most efficient ways to lose weight and three hours of cycling per week can reduce the risk of heart disease by 50%!

Demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, Bike Week is coordinated at a national level by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. For more information, please visit bikeweek.ie, you’ll find Bike Week on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
