My name is Claudia Larmour and I am in transition year in St Andrews College. This week I did a one week internship with Elevate PR. I really enjoyed working in Elevate as everyone was very welcoming, helpful and friendly. I was given many interesting jobs to do such as clippings, filing, research, office work and I was able to go see a photocall for one of Elevates client. I found the photocall really interesting and it showed me how much work goes into organising one. Now that I have done a week with Elevate I have much more knowledge about PR and I have learnt many new skills.

I have done previous work experience in John Rocha which gave me a better understanding about the fashion industry – I hope to have a successful career in fashion. I did a week in Planit event management and a week in the radiology department of St Vincents Hospital. I have really enjoyed all of my work placements and hope to use the skills I have learnt from these internships in the future.

This week guests from around the world joined Chef de Cave Richard Geoffroy at the Abbey of Hautvillers, the birthplace of Dom Pérignon, for the launch of Dom Pérignon Vintage 2004.

We love this video detailing the collection on display in ICON (Irish Craft Original Names), that we launched in association with the Crafts Council of Ireland, in Brown Thomas today.

ICON is an exhibition of unique, rare and innovative objects handcrafted by 16 Irish artists from the flagship publication ‘Irish Craft Portfolio: Critical Selection 2013-2014’, and will be on display in the Brown Thomas Grafton Street windows and The Designer Rooms on Level 1 until the middle of June.

The Just 4 Kids Show, Ireland’s newest children’s fair, which takes place in the RDS from Saturday, 25th May until Sunday, 26th May, 2013. The Just 4 Kids Show understands what makes children tick and what inspires and informs parents, and so, there will be a number of special learning and interactive areas throughout the show including workshops, technology and science, library, seminar and fun zones. The children at the Sacred Heart Primary School in Roscrea were singled out for some very special attention yesterday when they received a phone call from Chris Hadfield at the International Space Station. They were joined in their school by Kristin Hadfield, daughter of the astronaut, as they launched their website, www.sacredheartroscrea.com. Kristin, a PhD student at Trinity College Dublin, had been invited to the school to perform the launch and to give the children a special insight into life in space.

What began as an idea to promote the school with the theme “Reach for the Stars”, developed into a focus for the children to study and came to fruition as every child’s dream, contact with outer space. Col Hadfield took time from his duties aboard the Space Station to both recognise and praise the efforts the children and their teachers had made. Kristin, for her part was instrumental in engineering the contact. She was very impressed with the research the children had done engaging with all aspects of technology and social media to do so.

Kristin was giving a presentation to the school when her phone rang. As it was not widely known that the contact was scheduled so the children, teachers and parents who were gathered sat stunned to hear in person from the commander himself. As Kristin put her Dad on speaker he could be heard asking if this was a good time. As it happened his timing could not have been better. Many of the adults were visibly emotional as Chris Hadfield told the children what they had to do if they wanted to become astronauts. Commander Hadfied said “Remember, you are going to grow up to be something, you can decide for yourself what that is going to be. Then you have to turn yourself to being that person.” If the children decided to become astronauts there are three things according to the Canadian that they must do. Firstly they have to keep their bodies fit and healthy. Secondly they have to get themselves a good education and thirdly they have to make good decisions. Making good decisions is something that has to be practised in order to be achieved.

Commander Hadfield told the children that they had just had a fire drill on board. He reported that unlike school they could not just run outside so instead they put on suits and dealt with the situation. The Commander was leaving to exercise which is a vital part of life on board the station. The children and guests who were attending the schools Open Day burst into spontaneous applause. The children had done extensive study on the life and times of Commander Hadfield and what life is like in space. This phone call was both out of this world and the icing on the cake on what was the culmination of a huge body of work. In a very personal moment to finish the call Kristin told her Dad she loved him and in return her Dad said “I love you too Kristin” which drew a huge sigh of emotion from the crowd. There was more applause as the enormity of what had just happened dawned, a phone call from the International Space Station, an extraordinary event on what had become an extraordinary school day for the children at the Sacred Heart School in Roscrea. If you’re in outer space it really is a long way to Tipperary!
