Meteor is leading the way in terms of Irish telecommunications companies embracing social media. Meteor’s Facebook page was launched on April 12th this year and in less than ten weeks has over 6,000 fans, more than any of its competitors. In total, 35,000 people have visited the Meteor Facebook page since its launch. Meteor’s online strategy is to provide compelling and engaging content, offering fans/followings a forum to communicate directly and openly with them online. Meteor is also the first operator to provide free internet on your phone with up to 250MB for pre–pay customers, along with free Meteor texts, so you can stay connected while you’re out and about.
This week saw Meteor cement it’s social networking strategy with the crowning of Ireland’s first ever King of Social Networking. After gaining the most votes through Meteor’s Facebook competition to find the person in Ireland who just couldn’t live without being able to communicate online, Phil Gibney from Finglas Co Dublin was announced as the winner. As part of the prize, Phil starred in his own photoshoot this week along with model, Ruth Griffin.

Elevate
By Abi Bock
It was during my interview at Elevate PR when I realized Irish English does not equal American English.
One of my interviewers was from Donegal, enough said. The other asked me to come in at half nine. “Sorry, does that mean half after nine or before?”
I moved to Dublin from New York in January 2010 and have slowly been understanding those slight language barriers.
So, what I’ve learned:
I’m knackered – “I’m really tired,” OH.
“Lovely.” Lovely word, I’m bringing it back with me.
“Grand” – That’s grand, you’re grand, grand, grand, grand – so many usages!
Thanks a mil = Thanks a lot!
Good woman.
“Rubbish” – cute way of saying trash.
Cheryl Cole – I didn’t know who she was before Ireland…
